Genetics, food habits, environment and general lack of interest to do physical work on part of a child are some of the major causes for childhood obesity. To prevent a child from obesity the focus must be on providing energy balance i.e. supervision of calorie intake against calories expensed.
For genetic or hereditary obesity one must consult a doctor. But in case, one is of view that a child’s obesity is due to food habits then the child must be supervised not to eat lot of junk food or fatty foods. Issues like watching a lot of television or sitting in front of a PC or console box can make a child lazy. So, they should be encouraged to do some physical activities.
It is not that only obese adults are running a risk of their health but an obese child too runs the risk of heart disease or any other obesity related diseases. So, to give them a healthier life a parent must ensure that his/her child gets nutritionally balanced diet and should minimise the idle time available to the child.
A young child is psychologically tender, so utmost care should be taken while supervising them. They should be carefully told what to eat even while he or she is with his/her friends. They should be given enough information so that they make it a point to follow a strict diet.
